Chapter 4: Classrooms

Chapter 4

Classrooms

The day went by pretty slow for me. I had two classes with Nick and one of them was gym; one of the worse class to have your crush in.

“We’re running the mile,” said our gym teacher. Everyone groaned except for Nick and I.

“Alright!” he cheered. He seemed like he was the only different one. Deep inside, I love running but I wasn’t very good at it. I liked feeling the breeze through my hair and my face. I made no noise but just smile. No one seemed to notice but Nick. Everyone headed outside and went onto the track field.

“Ready…go!” Everyone started jogging slowly. I didn’t really care if I was last or not. I just wanted to get a good exercise and clear my mind from everything. Of course, Nick was the head of the leader. He’s really athletic, just like Ryan. They both play soccer.

They sure have a lot in common. Kenzie jogged next to me and asked, “Who?”

“Did I say something?”

“Ummm…they sure have a lot in common?”

“Oh, I said that out loud?”

“Yeah”

“Oh…it’s no one. I was just thinking…about stuff,” I smiled. What else was I suppose to say; that I was comparing Nick to Ryan?

Kenzie was about to ask something again until her friend called her, “Kenzieeeee! I’m all the way here, and you’re all the way there!” she whined.

“Coming,” Kenzie sped past me. She looked back and shouted, “I have more questions to ask you in biology!”

“Whatever you say!” I shouted back. I quickened up a little, and then Nick sped past me. He looked back and winked.

How embarrassing.

Suddenly my heart beat went up and down. It didn’t help me run very well. A lot of people in my class ran past me. Two more laps to go. I ignored Nick and pretended he was a big ogre. I started laughing and that didn’t help me run either. I thought back to Ryan and then I started running faster. I passed Kenzie and was behind Nick. He suddenly stopped out of no where.

“Ah!”

“Woah,” I couldn’t tell if Nick was surprised or not.

“Sorry,” I apologized quickly, and then kept running. It turned out Nick was already done running his laps. For the rest of the lap, I sprinted down.

“8:15,” said the gym teacher.

“T-thanks,” I gasped walking towards a breezy tree and lay down.

“SIT UP! DON’T LIE DOWN AFTER YOU’RE DONE RUNNING! KEEP WALKING!” shouted my gym teacher. I immediately got up and ran back to the track.

“Sheesh,” Kenzie ran pass me and stopped.

“9:13.”

“Congrats,” I sent her an air high five.

“Thanks,” she was out of breath.

Kenzie turned to me and asked,

“So…how’s life?”

“Mmm..,” I paused for a moment, “Fine, I guess. How’s yours?”

“Mine’s great. I haven’t seen Ryan in soccer lately,” she sighed.

“Ryan hasn’t been in soccer? What happened?”

“Sheesh, Sara. When have you been so worried about him, and I don’t know.”

Maybe I should’ve thought before I acted.

“Oh…” I looked down.

“EVERYONE GO BACK TO THE BUILDING,” our gym teacher yelled out of no where. It made Kenzie and I jump.

People started walking towards the shadowy, breezy trees. I faced up smiling, letting the wind pass around my throat. I closed my eyes. I felt like I was in my own little world now. Why did Ryan quit? I have to talk to him right now. Ryan better have a good excuse for quitting.

“Sara! Look out!”

I got knocked down and realized I bumped into a huge tree.

I heard chuckles across the air, just like the ones I heard this morning.

Kenzie lend me a hand.

“Thanks,” I muttered.

“Oh, wow. You’re becoming more like me everyday. I use to run into walls and…yeah…” she paused, “But you run into trees,” she stuck her tongue out.

“HURRY UP LADIES,” shouted the gym teacher, holding the door open for us. Who ever had her as a mom I felt very sorry for.

We ran inside and got dressed back to our normal clothes.

“Science time!” I said cheerfully as I put on my shirt.

“Since when have you been excited about science?” asked Mary, annoyed.

“Well…since I’m dating Ryan now, and we’re in the LGI room, I get to talk and see him,” I smiled as I took the hair tie off.

“Obsessed much?”

I walked to the door and turned around, “Naw…just love,” I turned back to the door and walked out.

I wonder why Ryan wasn’t in soccer. I mean, he loves soccer. He never told me he hasn’t been in soccer. At least I’m not the only one who’s keeping secrets. We shouldn’t even be keeping secrets. Wait, no…I already told him everything at the park yesterday afternoon. Ah ha! So he’s been keeping secrets from me!

“Sara!” Alliyah pushed me a little.

“Liyah!” I shouted almost dropping my folders and books. “Since when have you been right by me?”

“Uh…1 minute ago?” she said coolly.

“Didn’t realize.”

Alliyah sighed as we sat onto the floor of the LGI room.

I sat up for like two minutes, got bored, then laid down on the floor and looked up at the ceiling. Alliyah, Mandi, Kiet, Shawn, and Drew’s face looked down at me, blocking my view from the dirty ceiling.

“Guys…,” I groaned.

Kiet smiled and pointed at someone. I sat up and looked at the direction she pointed in.

“Ryan!” I crawled to him.

“Hey,” he smiled.

“I need to talk to you!”

“Okay, people. We’re watching a movie today. I expect all of you to be quiet and sit where you are right now. No moving during the movie or now,” instructed the science teacher.

This is perfect. I wanted to sit with my friends since I haven’t talk to any of them lately. I’m stuck sitting here with Ryan. I looked back and saw my friends smiling at me. I knew that they knew I was dating Ryan. Shawn winked and Alliyah whispered,

“Good luck!”

I forced a smile and turned back around. The movie was about diseases and how it spreads. Suddenly, it popped out an old man with blood coming out of his eyes, ears, nose, and everywhere. I gasped and whispered to Ryan,

“I didn’t know the school is allowed to show violence now!”

Ryan chuckled and I was about to lean towards him when he looked at me, reminding that we’re still in school.

“Right…” I mumbled. Ryan smiled and looked back at the screen. When I first saw Ryan, I never knew that I could ever hear his voice because he’s so quiet around me. Then I didn’t know we were going to be friends. Then when we were, I never would have guessed he would smile at me. Sure he’s waved and smiled at me before but it’s strange, you know? Then…this. I looked at Ryan. He was smiling, knowing I’m looking at him. Does that guy ever get his cheeks tired? He couldn’t possibly be smiling at that gore and disgusting things.

I put my knees in front of me and started taking notes in the movie. I looked over at Ryan and he had one page done. That wasn’t much surprising because after all, Ryan is in double advance math, and has a 98% in it. Does he have smart aura?

When science was over, everyone started packing their things. I didn’t have anything to say to Ryan. We still had five minutes left before lunch time. Drew walked towards me and whispered in my ear, “I saw you trying to lean on Ryan!” he sneered.

“Well…you would want Mandi to lean on you,” I rolled my eyes.

“Maybe…” he nodded, stroking his invisible beard.

The bell rang and everyone stormed to the lunch room. I was last and the seats were all taken. I didn’t know where to sit. Even the table where my friends and I sat was taken. The only spot that was left was across from Ryan. Gee, what a coincidence. Kiet and Alyssa probably planned it. I looked at him and he was working on the science paper again. Alliyah, Mandi, Drew, and Shawn were there. Kiet, Linh, and Alyssa were at the table where I was supposed to sit. I sat next to Shawn and across from Ryan.

“It feels weird to sit here,” I stated.

“First time sitting here?” Ryan looked up.

“Not really,” I replied.

“Come on Sara! Hurry and sit at Ryan’s seat!” Alliyah poked me.

“Haha…,” I sounded like I was laughing for real, “No,” I turned to Alliyah with a serious voice.

“Why not?”

“Because Tim’s there! He’ll tell Ryan and I’m gonna be embarrassed for eternity!”

“You are being to dramatic,” Linh stated. Just then, Tim got up and followed Ryan.

“Go now!” Kiet pushed me and I sat in Ryan’s seat for a second. It was very cozy. I ran back and laughed, “Mission Sitting In Ryan’s Seat has been completed.”

I put both of my hands on my lap and stared at Ryan’s paper. He didn’t realize because he was watching the principle calling the tables.

“One and two,” she sounded like a robot.

“Ok! We’re next!” barked Mandi.

“What did you want to ask?” asked Ryan.

Suddenly all of my friends, and Tim looked at him. They never actually heard him talk more than two words. Most importantly, they never heard him ask a question to anyone. Or at least I don’t think any of my friends did. They looked at him in shock.

“Guys…don’t stare at him,” I frowned.

“Sorry,” Mandi and Alliyah apologized.

“This isn’t a really good time to ask,” I whispered to him. He nodded even though he was the first one to ask.

“Threes and Fours,” called out our principle like a robot again. We all sped down to the lunch line.

“NO! I GOT HERE FIRST!” said Andrew in a joking voice.

“Noooo…,” Shawn said in a shameful voice. Ryan didn’t look this way but laughed. I sat down after I got my lunch like everyone else did. I bit into my burger slowly. Once again, I started spacing out like I always does at lunch. When I used to sit where Kiet, Alyssa, and Linh sat, Linh always asked what was wrong. I was glad that I didn’t have anyone staring at me now.

“What’s wrong?” asked Ryan.

I spoke to soon. I just shook my head and looked at the TV commercials.

I know Linh is trying to care for me, but I want to eat lunch without a person staring at me…just peace…and quiet, for once.

“FOOD FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“So much for peace and quiet,” I rolled my eyes. I threw my milk carton and my unfinished burger at some random person then hid under the table with the red tray over my face. That’s what they get for hitting me with a fork.

“WHO THREW THAT AT ME?” shouted an oversized chubby kid. People started pointing at me. Why me?

“Uh oh…,” I whispered to myself as I looked up from him,

“Hi,” I smiled at him. I tried the persuading smile Ryan always did but it probably looks annoying on me.

“NO ONE THROW FOOD AT ME!” he spit those words out. Yep, it definitely looked annoying on me.

Everyone stopped throwing the food and stared at me and the big kid. I saw Alliyah tip toeing. She came closer and closer and hit him with her lunch tray, slamming him on the ground.

“Owie…,” he moaned.

“Oh my gosh! Thanks Alliyah! You’re a life savor!” I hugged her even though she had tomato stain on her Aeropostale shirt.

“Sorry,” Alliyah laughed.

“No problem!” I still hugged her tightly.

“Can’t breathe…,” she turned blue.

For the rest of the day, everyone smelled like cheese burger and French toast.

“Woah, what happened?” asked Ryan.

“Food fight,” I answered, “You’re so lucky you were in the bathroom.”

“What happened?”

“Oh…kid… big one… almost smashed me.”

He raised an eye brow.

“Alliyah! She’s a LIFE SAVOR,” I continued.

“Haha, glad to hear that,” we headed into our last class of the day.

“Ladies first,” he bowed.

“So classy,” I stated as I headed in.

“Sara!” Kenzie called out to ask me to sit by her in Biology.

“Hi,” I greeted back.

“Who were you thinking about?” she asked. Nick and Ryan were in my biology too.

“Nick…,” I whispered in her ear, “Well anyway, why do you think Ryan hasn’t been in soccer?”

Kenzie turned to look and Ryan, then whispered in my ear,

“People have been whispering saying it’s about this one girl. I doubt it’s us though. I mean really, would he actually give up soccer for one of us? We barely know him,” she sighed.

“Heh…heh…yeah…that WOULD BE STUPID TO GIVE UP SOMETHING THEY LIKE FOR A GIRL,” I spoke loudly hoping that he could hear me. I looked at Ryan. He wasn’t paying attention. I almost blew up. He seemed to be day dreaming. Kenzie turned her head the other direction and saw Nick staring at me.

“Psst…your lover is staring at you,” she whispered. I was about to turn my head to Ryan, then realized Kenzie will figure out that I still like him. I turned my head to Nick, and then Nick looked away. I swore I saw his cheek rise higher, as if he was smiling or something.

I got out of my stool and walked to him.

“Did you do your homework last night?”

Nick turned his face in disappointment, thinking that I would ask something more than that.

“Er…yeah,” he pulled out his homework.

“Did you think problem six was hard?”

“Well…not really,” It was so obvious he lied. I could just tell because it had a bunch of scribbles and erase marks.

“Uh huh,” I laughed then walked to Ryan. I heard Nick mumbling under his breath, wishing him and I started a conversation to make Ryan jealous. Ryan didn’t notice until I walked to his desk.

“Hiya,” I greeted him.

“Hey,” he replied.

“Did you think problem six was hard?” I asked Ryan this time.

“Hmm…sort of, how about you?”

“It was…pretty hard,” I looked at his paper. It was cleaner than Nicks.

Ryan turned his face to look at Nick. Then he took a big sigh and said, “Will he ever give up?”

I turned around finding Nick glaring at Ryan. I tried to flash him a look to tell him to knock it off but he wasn’t paying any attention to me.

After class, Ryan waited at my desk. Nick also walked where I was too.

“What are you doing?” Nick asked Ryan coldly.

“Waiting for Sara, what else?”

“Who do you think she is?”

“My girlfriend,” Ryan replied.

Good thing Kenzie wasn’t in the room but three popular girls opened their eyes in shock.

“Ryan likes her?” one whispered.

“Gross,” said the other

“Ryan and Sara do NOT match a good couple,” one rolled her eyes. I ignored them and looked at Ryan.

“Come on,” Ryan begins, “Let’s go.”

“I’m coming too,” Nick followed.

“She’s coming to my house,” Ryan looked back at him.

I was surprised but I didn’t say anything.

“Wait,” Nick commanded, “I wanna talk to her,” Nick looked at me this time.

“Go,” Ryan whispered to me. I nodded and walked over to Nick.

“Hey Nick, what’s u-,” I stopped by Nick’s pleasant smile.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hello,” I smiled.

“What did you want to say to me?” I asked him.

“Nothing,” he looked away, “Just wanted to talk in a conversation. I want to talk to you before today ends.”

“Oh wow, Nick,” I laughed.

“Done yet?” Ryan asked impatiently.

“Almost,” Nick laughed, “So how are you doing?”

“Fine…,” I looked at him then to the ground.

“You’re not really, are you?” he asked another question.

“What is this, 20 questions?” I looked annoyed.

“Heh,” Nick looked down too, “I really wish you could…be with m-,”

“Done yet?” Ryan asked. I was glad Ryan cut him off.

“Yeah,” this time I replied. I didn’t want to have anything that’s love to do with Nick anymore. I ran quickly towards Ryan and swung my arm around his. I turned around finding Nick sitting at his desk with his head in his arms. Ryan was right. When will he give up?
