But no, I didn\u2019t get to that\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Just do it already!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Well,\u00a0if it were that easy, then\u00a0we wouldn\u2019t see so many clients seeking coaching services for help combatting\u00a0procrastination.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">So how can a coach help when a client\u2019s goal is to address their procrastination?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sure,\u00a0we can explore techniques like tomato\u00a0or Pomodoro\u00a0timers, urgent\/non urgent matrixes, focus sprints, eat a frog. And yes, what needs to get done may get done\u00a0but if we stop at this surface level coaching, chances are the issue will persist.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why? Because the issue behind the issue has not been addressed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this article I invite you to\u00a0take a\u00a0look\u00a0at procrastination through\u00a0a different lens. I\u00a0will\u00a0borrow\u00a0the theory\u00a0and concepts\u00a0of Cognitive Behavioral\u00a0therapy\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0explore how a\u00a0coach\u2019s understanding of\u00a0these concepts\u00a0can be a powerful resource to help clients.\u00a0We\u2019ll also look at\u00a0two\u00a0exercises you can use with your clients.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><strong>First, let\u2019s define Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/beckinstitute.org\/about\/intro-to-cbt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beck Institute<\/a>, \u201cCBT is based on\u202fthe\u202ftheory that\u202fthe way individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><b>Next, understand the behavior. <\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To help your\u00a0client\u00a0work\u00a0toward implementing long-lasting behavioral change, you need to dig.\u00a0DEEP.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why?\u00a0Because generally speaking,\u00a0people\u00a0don&#8217;t procrastinate\u00a0in actual avoidance of\u00a0the task at hand.\u00a0Many factors lead to procrastination, and\u00a0while there is not usually a single cause, there\u00a0is a common denominator:\u00a0It is not the task itself.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The task is neutral.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What leads to procrastination is\u00a0the judgment\u00a0of\u00a0the task and the associated thoughts and emotions that go with it\u00a0(reaction). If\u00a0the\u00a0task\u00a0is perceived\u00a0to be unpleasant, unnecessary,\u00a0etc.,\u00a0it\u2019s more likely to be associated with emotions like fear, causing the client to avoid or delay doing the task.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In other words, your client is trying to avoid the negative feelings that they have associated with the task, not the task itself.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Underlying unpleasant thoughts and emotions can occur for many reasons,\u00a0including:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Action conflicts with\u00a0personal values\u00a0(cognitive dissonance)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fears\u00a0and Anxiety\u00a0(of success,\u00a0failures)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Overwhelming Stress (unrealistic expectations, not SMART goal, perfectionism)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Limiting beliefs, lack of self-confidence and self-esteem<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">No identified motivators, lack of meaning and purpose<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Remember to refer your client to an appropriate health care professional or resource if you feel or they have disclosed something that goes beyond the scope of coaching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><b>With this new perspective in mind, how can a coach help?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Procrastination is the obstacle to achieving a goal, but the underlying mechanisms (reaction to and judgment of the task) driving the behavior are the obstacles to overcoming procrastination.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A coach can help a client better understand, recognize, identify, label and work on the underlying mechanisms driving the behavior. By doing so, the client not only gets done what they need to (which achieves the goal, but doesn\u2019t solve the underlying issue),but also cultivates learning and new thinking that can lead to long lasting behavioral change \u2013 procrastination does not have to be a life-long, recurring issue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">2 exercises that can help you and your client.<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Challenge the Thoughts (using the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/albertellis.org\/rebt-cbt-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy<\/a>)<\/strong>But remember: you are not providing treatment or therapy. These CBT concepts can, however, help guide your questions, evoke awareness, cultivate new learning and thinking, implement change and design action plans.\n<p>Let\u2019s look at an example for this activity:<\/p>\n<p><em>Object of procrastination (task, goal to be accomplished, etc.): <\/em>Applying for a job.<\/p>\n<p><em>Automatic thoughts (judgments): <\/em>I don&#8217;t think I am qualified (self-doubt).<\/p>\n<p><em>Related emotion (reaction): <\/em>I feel discouraged, unmotivated.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Alternate way of thinking: <\/em>Maybe I should give myself a chance &#8211; I do have [x] years of experience.<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><em>New effect: <\/em>I feel more confident, motivated and ready to apply.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>Challenge the Behavior<\/strong><\/strong>&nbsp;\n<p>Continuing the example above, let&#8217;s look at how to challenge the behavior of procrastination.<em>Task that needs to get done:<\/em> Apply to that job.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why does that task need to be done? (keep asking why until you get to the underlying motivator):\u00a0<\/em>Because I need more money.\u00a0<em>Why?\u00a0<\/em>Because I want to pay off my mortgage.\u00a0<em>Why?<\/em>\u00a0<em>etc. etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Current method \/ approach:\u00a0<\/em>Postpone the task every day.<\/p>\n<p><em>How is that approach working\/not working:\u00a0<\/em>Not working &#8211; I still have not applied for the job and am constantly thinking about it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Obstacles \/ Challenges:\u00a0<\/em>I don&#8217;t feel good about my resume &#8211; it is outdated and I need some help.<\/p>\n<p><em>Possible New Approach (or use of old approach if working):\u00a0<\/em>I am meeting with a resume strategist to help me with my resume and setting a SMART goal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I hope this article has ignited a shift in thinking, a different way of approaching and helping clients through procrastination and provided additional tools for your coaching toolbox!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019ll do it later.
