She wasn’t the prettiest girl in the class, she didn’t even think she was pretty at all. ”Ugly Betty” was what she heard two girls say as she walked home one day. Sometimes she would cry at night, she would cry because she wanted to be pretty and popular, she just wanted to be normal. Her friends didn’t notice much, she would try and hide her sorrows. She would pretend to be happy, she would pretend to be positive and naive but in reality she was dying inside. Each day she saw people walk past, the school flooded with people yet she never felt more alone. Trying to hide behind others so she didn’t attract attention, trying to be alone. She didn’t want to be embarrassed, ashamed in front of everyone. Lord knows that if she was the whole school would hear about it in a couple of seconds. But her name was Sophie and she was fed up of drowning in her sorrows. Sick and tired of being the smart, ugly and shy girl.
So she tried to find others, others who would understand her. Others who didn’t care what she looked like and they wouldn’t care what she looked like because they didn’t have to see her everyday, and Sophie was fine with that. So she went on one of those ‘Social Networking sites’, made herself an avatar and felt ok. She started to make friends, she’d talk to them everyday and they’d laugh with her, and not at her. Until one day she met someone else. His name was John and he made her smile. It wasn’t long before they became boyfriend and girlfriend. But she dared tell anyone, as much as she wanted to Sophie knew they would all laugh at her. They wouldn’t believe her, no way. So she kept quiet. She enjoyed spending time with John, and visa versa. It wasn’t the closest relationship, they could only type sweet love notes to each other and they lived miles apart. But they didn’t care, as long as they were together that’s all that mattered.
But Sophie was unsure, she didn’t feel as if she deserved this guy. After all she was just the smart, ugly and shy girl, who’d love her anyway? She felt heartbroken, ashamed of not being good enough for a guy who was clearly head over heels for her. John noticed she acted strangely, he had been talking to her but she had hardly responded all night. “What’s wrong?” he typed in concern. “I’m not good enough for you” She replied “There are plenty of other girls out there you could have. I’m Sorry” John was shocked. Was Sophie really saying this. “But you’re the only girl I want, I love you, babe.” He typed. Sophie smiled, maybe this guy did love her after all?
But sometimes, relationships just don’t work out. Sophie was happy, for once in her life. That is until she got home. She smiled as she went to check any cute messages John had left her but she found a long message instead. “Sophie, It’s me John. Listen, I love you. But it can’t work between us. My granddad’s ill and my brother’s just moved and we’re gonna be sharing a room which’ll make it hard for us to speak as we share accounts. I’m Sorry but it’s over You deserve someone better. John xxx”
Sophie gasped at what she saw, she had to read it at least 10 times for it to sink in. Suddenly she felt cold, so cold. She would take back what she said about her not being good enough for him! She just wanted him back, s
o they could talk and laugh. She didn’t want to be lonely again, then that night she cried herself to sleep again. And again and again for a week. Until she had enough courage to look on his profile again, she just wanted to see if he was alright and maybe he might even take back what he said? But she was wrong. She looked to see his comments on his profile, there weren’t any that she had written. There was one or two to his brother but no messages were from her. She used to send him messages almost everyday, just simple ones saying ‘I love you. Can’t wait to speak to you again.’ There were messages saying ‘I love you.’ But they weren’t from her, looks like he might have taken her advice. He’d found himself a prettier girl, blonde, big chested and wearing gaudy pink clothes. Sophie was so angry she almost broke the glass she was holding. She didn’t know whether to laugh or scream so she cried. She cried again, and even after her tears were dry, She cried again.
